Our Story
Anvil Academy North began with a simple question:
What if we challenged boys the way God designed them to grow?
Before founding Anvil, Executive Director Ben Kuiken spent years serving as both a teacher and coach in a traditional educational setting. During that time, Ben and his principal noticed a growing trend among many young boys. Bright, capable students who learned differently were often struggling to sit still, stay engaged, or fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all classroom model.
Too often, these boys began believing the labels placed upon them or the labels they placed on themselves.
"I'm stupid."
"I'm the bad kid."
"I'll never be good at school."
Over time, those words became part of their identity.
But Ben knew something different. He had seen these same boys come alive when they were given meaningful responsibility, real challenges, caring mentors, and the opportunity to build something with their own hands.
That conviction led Ben and a close friend to launch The Anvil Academy in Georgia—a hands-on discipleship and leadership program designed to develop boys academically, spiritually, and practically through meaningful work, biblical mentorship, and authentic relationships. Today, that program continues to thrive, impacting families across the region.
When Ben and his family later relocated to Pennsylvania, they brought that same vision with them. As the need for purposeful mentorship continued to grow, Anvil Academy North was established to serve boys throughout southeastern Pennsylvania by challenging minds, engaging hearts, and putting hands to work.
In just two years, God has done far more than we could have imagined.
More than 400 boys have participated in Anvil programs, representing 75 different schools and 60 different churches and church backgrounds. Boys from public schools, private schools, charter schools, cyber schools, and homeschool communities now learn and grow together around the forge.
Our mission has never been simply to teach blacksmithing, woodworking, or outdoor skills.
Our mission is to help boys discover who they were created to become.
We believe young men flourish when they are challenged, trusted, encouraged, and pointed toward Jesus Christ. Every project we build, every adventure we take, every lesson we teach, and every mentor relationship we cultivate exists for one purpose:
To forge strong young men of character, conviction, and faith who are prepared to lead their families, churches, workplaces, and communities for the glory of God.
